چکیده

Early diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease (PD) is of immense importance, since clinical symptoms do not occur until substantial parts of the brain stem have been irreparably damaged. Recent work suggests that by means of transcranial sonography (TCS) it is possible to determine the formation of monogenic forms of parkinsonism at a very early state. In TCS images, the mesencephalon shows a distinct hyperechogenic pattern in about 90% of patients with PD, despite its normal appearance on CT and MRI scans. At present, this pattern is manually segmented and the region size is used as an early PD indicator. In order to remove investigator dependence inherent to manual segmentation, we develop and validate semi-automatic features to serve as risk factors for PD manifestation. We show in a clinical study that some of the features correlate significantly with the presence of specific genetic mutations causing PD. Keywords— Early Diagnosis, Investigator Independence, Parkinson’s Disease, Substantia Nigra, Transcranial Sonography.

Texture Analysis Using Gabor Filter Based on Transcranial Sonography Image

Transcranial sonography (TCS) is a new tool for the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease (PD) at a very early state. The TCS image of the mesencephalon shows a distinct hyperechogenic pattern in about 90% PD patients. This pattern is usually manually segmented and the substantia nigra (SN) region can be used as an early PD indicator. However this method is based on manual evaluation of examined ima...

Transcranial brain parenchymal sonography in neurodegenerative and psychiatric diseases.

Transcranial sonography is a highly sensitive noninvasive sonographic method for detection of early and specific echogenic changes in basal ganglia of patients with some neurodegenerative diseases. Transcranial sonography showed substantia nigra hyperechogenicity as a typical echo feature in idiopathic Parkinson disease and lenticular nucleus hyperechogenicity as a characteristic finding in aty...

The Role of Neuroimaging in the Diagnosis of Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s disease (PD), the second most common neurodegenerative disease, is characterized by the progressive loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the formation of intracytoplasmic Lewy inclusion bodies. To date, the diagnosis of idiopathic PD is mainly based on its cardinal clinical features: resting tremor, bradykinesia and...

Transcranial sonography and [I]FP-CIT SPECT disclose complementary aspects of Parkinson’s disease

Hyperechogenic signal of substantia nigra (SN) in transcranial sonography (TCS) and reduced striatal uptake in FP-CIT SPECT are commonfindings in idiopathic Parkinson’s disease (PD). But so far it is unknownwhether the extent of SN hyperechogenicity represents a correlate for the degeneration of presynaptic dopaminergic neurons in PD. We performed TCS and I-labelled N-(3-fluoropropyl)-2ß-carbom...

Diagnostic Accuracy of Transcranial Sonography of the Substantia Nigra in Parkinson’s disease: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis

A large number of articles have reported substantia nigra hyperechogenicity in Parkinson's disease (PD) and have assessed the diagnostic accuracy of transcranial sonography (TCS); however, the conclusions are discrepant. Consequently, this systematic review and meta-analysis aims to consolidate the available observational studies and provide a comprehensive evaluation of the clinical utility of...
